LB Newham is funding a Food Academy programme to train Food Champions in Newham, local residents that will be able to provide cooking demonstrations and key classes to our local communities and organisations. Food Academy has been teaching cooking and providing cooking demonstrations for almost 4 years, all around East London -more than 1200 graduates and more than 220 food events. We have used all the knowledge and expertise gained during this period to design an intense 1 week training programme that covers key cooking skills, teaching techniques, event logistics and community engagement. Our trainees also received food safety training and receive a Level 2 food safety certificate. We then provide practical training and support for our Food Champions work with local communities and organisations.
We are currently in our second group of trainees and the feedback has been very positive. We are training individuals from organisations such as Anchor House (working with homeless adults), Richard House (children’s hospice), Hestia (ex-offenders and mental health), Ekta (vulnerable Asian women), parents from Gallions School and Play Sow and Grow (Community Links). During the school half term in February we will be training teachers from a number of schools.
We are very excited about this programme because it allows us to substantially amplify the impact of the work we do in support of good food and cooking in East London. We will be counting on all our trained food champions to share their knowledge with their local community and with their own organisations. If you would like your organisation to be involved please call Sandeep at 02081276657.
